……
Mom, what is Coronavirus?
Despite their young age, children are very intelligent, receptive, and attentive, so it is not surprising that at some point they ask about this disease that has been talked about so much.
REYNOSA, TAM.-
The word most commonly heard or read today is Coronavirus, in talks, in medical reports, on social networks, in the media, every day, and at all hours.
For this reason, it would not be unusual for children, who are so perceptive to everything around them and who, although it may not seem so, are always paying attention, ask about it.
Psychologist Alejandra Zertuche Rodríguez stated that if the child asks directly, the best thing is not to beat around the bush.
“They should look for the right words and never lie to them, but the main thing is to avoid alarming them since they do not have the critical capacity of adults and can misinterpret what they hear”, she said.
He said that is why it is necessary to discuss it with them so that they calm down and that they do not suppose erroneous conclusions.
If in doing so they show concern that they could be infected, it is necessary to explain to them how it is spread and the prevention methods that they must carry out.
“We must explain to them that it is good to take extra hygiene measures over a period of time, such as washing hands with soap and water, covering the mouth with the internal angle of the elbow when sneezing and coughing, and avoiding visiting people with respiratory diseases”, she express.
If despite all of the above, the child has some doubts, they must be listened to, perhaps he was given too much information or that generated new ones.
“You have to solve them using clear and simple language and make sure that they have understood everything or almost everything and if not, let them know that they can continue asking when they want”, said the expert.
Parents should give the child confidence and let him know that he is not afraid.
“Our children live in this world and although we think that they do not realize anything, they find out everything, it is not about keeping them on the sidelines, but about avoiding alarming news that does not bring them anything”, said the master in child Gestalt psychotherapy.
Zertuche Rodríguez commented that, before discussing sensitive issues with children, there are certain points that must be considered, such as:
– The age of the child, because due to this they will not process things the same.
– Its maturational development, since its physical age, does not necessarily its degree of maturity.
– The moment, since perhaps at that moment the child does not want to talk about it.
– The person who will talk to him should be calm and prepared to say that if he does not know some answers, he will investigate and present them at another time.
If your child has not yet asked about the Coronavirus, it will surely do so at some point, so you need to be properly informed on the subject so that you do not take it by surprise.
